Outreach
As a team we strongly believe in spreading the word of FIRST. As a result, we do many projects to reach out to the community.
Junior Robotics Challenge (JRC)
Every summer Team 1735 hosts the Junior Robotics Challenge at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. This is a week long program designed to get elementary and middle school students into engineering and robotics. Members of Team 1735 guide the participants through the design and build process of creating a LEGO® NXT robot designed to complete specific tasks centered on a theme. There are multiple sessions, introducing as many kids as possible to robotics, while raising money for our team.
FIRST LEGO® League - The Purple Reapers
In the fall, members of the Burncoat High School robotics team mentor FIRST LEGO® League teams at Burncoat Middle School known as The Purple Reapers. FIRST LEGO League is a "little league" of sorts where the team members build a robot to complete tasks such as cleaning up pollution or researching nanotechnology. The students must also research the topic given out for the year and come up with a solution to a problem. Last year The Purple Reapers won the "Rising Star Award" for how they function like a veteran team as a rookie team.
Community Outreach
We work with local groups in the community such as WPI and St. John's Church during the year. St. John's Church donates their hall for our spaghetti suppers and pancake breakfasts.
